How to Keep Your Dog Focused During an Agility Competition
An agility competition is often an exciting place for a dog, with the brightly colored course, spectators and other dogs in view. Keeping your dog focused on you and your commands at a competition can be challenging, however there are several things you can do to help keep your dog on task, though it may take several competitions and lots of training time before your dog becomes comfortable at a competition and is able to direct all of its focus towards you.

Teach your dog to look at you. Find a quiet place to work with your dog. Show your dog a small treat and then hold it away from your body. When your dog looks away from the treat and at you, praise your dog and give it the treat. As your dog gets better at the game, make it hold eye contact longer and practice in new settings. Have your dog look at you before completing any command or any activity on the agility course.
2Have your dog eliminate before starting the course. Encourage your dog to relieve itself before you start your course run to prevent distracting breaks on the course. Give your dog plenty of time to eliminate when you arrive at the competition and before your turn, and remain attentive to your dog's elimination cues throughout the day.
3Redirect your dog if it runs off course. If your dog gets distracted and runs off course, refocus it by having it look at you before beginning again. If your dog continues to leave the course, remove it from the ring, teaching it that it must listen and stay focused in order to complete the activities.
4Ask others to ignore your dog. Remind spectators to help you keep your dog focused by not calling to it or petting it if it runs off course. If your dog learns that spectators often provide praise and attention, it may be more likely to become distracted and lose focus.
5Offer treats and praise to your dog during training. When you practice agility, praise your dog when it stays focused and completes the course as expected.
