Choose a treat that you will only give your dog during training sessions. This ensures that it will know it can only get the treat once it has performed correctly. Try out different treats to determine which your dog likes best. Corgis are food-driven animals and will respond best when rewarded with treats that they are partial to.
Teach your dog basic commands, such as "Sit," "Down" and "Stay," before moving on to more advanced tricks. Corgis are small dogs, so kneel on the floor when teaching them new tricks to prevent them from feeling overpowered or threatened.
Begin with your dog in the down position or on its side. Because of their body shape and short legs, corgis may be resistant to being handled on their backs. Desensitize your dog to touch by rubbing its feet, legs and belly for a few minutes; releasing it; and then going back to the side position and repeating.
Hold your dog's front foot and back foot that are closest to the floor, and pull them around so that your dog is now lying on its other side. Say "Roll over" as you do this.
Reward your dog with a treat and lots of praise once it is lying on its other side. Do not reward your dog if it has not completed a proper roll. Because of the corgi's stubborn nature, your dog may refuse to complete the task once it thinks it will receive treats without doing so.
Repeat these steps until your dog rolls over by itself on command. This will take several lessons and a lot of patience.
