Imagine yourself being captured, your arms and legs get cut off with a cleaver by your captors, for what reason, you do not know. Bleeding, you get thrown back onto the streets with no one around. Barely alive and conscious, a slow and painful death awaits...
To many, sharks are just ruthless killers. Sadly, Hollywood drama has made these magnificent creatures strike fear into our hearts by making them look like crazed man-hunter. Yet, they are no more as dangerous as your neighbor's Doberman or Rottweiler, or even that cute Panda in a China Zoo. Most shark attacks occur because the sharks mistaken swimmers or surfers to be a seal or some other sea creatures. Other incidents may be due to us not giving them enough respect by encroaching too much into their habitat. In fact, according to International Shark Attack File, the chances of getting hit by lightning is much higher than that of being attacked by a shark.
Now, let's look at the flip side of the coin. Mankind ruthlessly hunt down these majestic creatures, cut off their fins, and throw them back, alive, into the ocean, to drown... and to die a slow and painful death. And for what? Just so that some people can have 'Shark's fin' in their soup! (Typically a popular dish in Asian society and culture). It is estimated that 10–100 million sharks are slaughtered each year for their fins. Now who are the RUTHLESS KILLERS?!?
I urge all who come across this message, please say 'NO' to Shark's Fin, in whatever form. Exclude this dish from your wedding banquet. If it is being served in a feast you attend, abstain from consuming it. And when those around you asks, take the opportunity to explain to them why. That is what I do. Help spread the awareness. If the demand for it can be stopped, then the killing can, too.
Here are some more information on Sharks being murdered for just their fins, and a bit of info on the chances of being attacked by sharks.
